Cobblestone street in La Candelaria, Bogotá, lined with colorful colonial houses

What to see

  • Plaza de Bolívar

Bogotá's main civic square, framed by the National Capitol, the Palace of Justice, and City Hall. The natural starting point for exploring the historic center.

  • Bogotá Cathedral (Catedral Primada)

The country's primary cathedral, on the eastern side of Plaza de Bolívar — one of the most significant colonial-era churches in the city.

  • Gold Museum (Museo del Oro)

Run by the Banco de la República, home to the world's largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold work, a short walk from the main square.

Getting there from Line 1

La Candelaria is a 10-15 minute walk from either Avenida Jiménez station or Central station — both put you near Carrera Séptima, the pedestrian street that runs straight up toward the square.

Where to stay

La Candelaria has the highest concentration of hostels and boutique hotels set in restored colonial houses — the most practical base if you want to walk to the main historic sights without relying on transport.
