About this area
Central station sits on Avenida Caracas, a corridor that dates back to 1933, when Bogotá's Acuerdo 53 renamed Carrera 14 in honor of those who fought in the Battle of Carabobo, according to Semana. It was originally laid out as a European-style boulevard by Austrian architect Karl Brunner, according to El Espectador. In 2000, under mayor Enrique Peñalosa, Avenida Caracas became Bogotá's first TransMilenio trunk corridor — a system inspired by Curitiba, Brazil — and it's that same corridor the metro now runs above, according to Bogotá's Secretaría Distrital de Gobierno and Wikipedia. Six of Line 1's 16 stations sit along this avenue: Hospital (HOMI), Avenida Jiménez, Central, Calle 45, Calle 63, and Calle 72. Central itself has a direct TransMilenio connection confirmed by the Bogotá city government, between calles 24A and 26, according to bogota.gov.co.
