Why is it underground?

With the exception of Station 11 (Fontanar), which will run on an elevated viaduct, the other ten Line 2 stations will run underground. EMB says the decision is based on a 2020 alternatives and feasibility study that compared environmental impact, construction process, urban planning, user experience, and financial cost across route options, according to bogota.gov.co, February 12, 2026.

Construction & operation

Line 2 is planned to run every 2.2 minutes at peak hours and every 10 minutes off-peak, with projected demand of up to 49,000 passengers per hour by 2042, its peak demand year. Tunnels will be bored using an EPBM (Earth Pressure Balance Machine) tunnel boring machine, at a depth of 25 to 35 meters, and the line is estimated to avoid roughly 87,000 tons of CO2 in its first year of operation, according to bogota.gov.co, February 12, 2026.
